Dear Parents,

In our modern society where technology is an integral part of our lives, our children are very much exposed to the world of the Internet. The ability to interact and communicate with others is one of the biggest attractions of the internet for children and youths. Online gaming has also increased in popularity in the recent years as a source of entertainment. However, participating in such activities can put them at risk of encountering online predators as the Internet has been abused by those who spread unwholesome or illegal content, or lure our children to unknowingly engage in unlawful behaviour.

We are pleased to inform you that our school, CHIJ (Katong) Primary, has planned a Cyber Wellness programme for our pupils. Cyber Wellness (CW) refers to the positive well-being of Internet users. It involves an understanding of online behaviour and awareness of how to protect oneself in cyberspace. The focus of CW is about helping students to become responsible digital learners. When navigating cyberspace, students should demonstrate respect for self and others and practise safe and responsible use. Students should also be a positive peer influence by harnessing technology for collaboration, learning and productivity, as well as advocating positive use of technology for the good of the community.

Our Cyber Wellness programme includes lessons during FTGP (Form Teacher Guidance Period) and assembly talks on Cyber-Safety and how to deal with other cyber issues such as addictive gaming, cyber bullying, social networking, risks we may face online as well as responsible online behaviour. We also have regular activities during school term to expose our students to various Cyber issues so as to increase their awareness. From 2016, CHIJ (Katong) Primary has our very own CyberSmart Day @ IJ annually where our students are engaged in various activities such as visiting exhibition booths, classroom talks and assembly talk.

You can also play a part in the Cyber Wellness education of your child by being aware of the risks related to online communication and involved in your child’s internet activities. It is important to guide and empower your child to act responsibly and wisely when using the internet. You can access the following websites to look up for resources and practical tips to gain a better understanding and knowledge of Cyber Wellness.

Thank you.

Warm regards,
Miss Angelia Zhang
